There are no friends on a powder day.

With all the hockey-related romance books hitting the shelves lately, I was so freaking stoked to see one centered around skiing. I’m a lifelong skier who grew up in a ski town and grew up racing. Obviously, not quite at the same level as Kit, and my training was never nearly as intense as hers. A few laps around the field constituted dryland training for us. 😂

What we have here is very much a black cat/golden retriever situation.

Kit is our black cat. She lives and dies by her schedules and routines and is basically zero fun. In fact, she doesn’t even really know what she does for fun. Asher, on the other hand, is pure golden retriever. He loves to have fun, and in addition to training Kit for her newest adventure in Olympic ski mountaineering, he also teaches her that it’s okay to loosen up a little and actually enjoy herself.

There is a little bit of insta-love here, which I’m normally a little iffy on, but I was totally okay with it because of how much time Kit and Asher spend together. Their relationship didn’t feel like it came out of nowhere. There’s also lots of witty banter, which I am always here for. I love how much time they spend together.

But what really sold me was the skiing.

There are so many little phrases, references, and details sprinkled throughout that only skiers would really pick up on, and Julie Cook absolutely nailed them. Nothing pulls me out of a book faster than when an author writes about something I know well and gets it completely wrong. That didn’t happen here. It genuinely felt like it was written by someone who knows and loves the sport.

This was a phenomenal debut from Julie Cook and such a fun change of pace from all the hockey romances I’ve been seeing lately.

Give me more ski romances, please! ⛷️❄️
